It's still a work in progress, but I'm making headway. Here's a few
photos of my progress so far. I got the basic plans from an old copy of Wood magazine. They used cherry for the jewelry box, but I had a large hunk of walnut that's been sitting in my shop for about 10 years so I decided to resaw it and make a walnut jewelry box instead. I wanted to lighten it up some, so I'm using some figured maple for the drawer fronts. Since it was about 5" thick, I was able to have similar pieces for the sides. I positioned them so the figure made sort of a bow in the back. There was a lot of really dark wood - probably water stains but nothing to do about them. Adds sort of a flame effect. On the front base molding I had a nice piece but cut it about a sixteenth short when doing the miters. Rats. Had to use another piece. I wanted to position it so that the arch was centered, but there was some snipe from the planer on the board and I couldn't go as far to the right as I wanted. Oh well. Not optimal, but not too bad. I haven't made the drawers yet, so the fronts are just positioned in the blanks to give an idea of what it'll look like. I resawed a pieced of figured maple then bookmatched it get the fronts. Golly I hope she likes it... ....Kevin -- Kevin Miller http://www.alaska.net/~atftb Juneau, Alaska Registered Linux User No: 307357 |
