The post about plum wood got me thinking about the dogwood logs I got
from a nieghbor (at least I think it's dogwood). I've never seen
anything made from this before, does anyone have any expeirence
turning it?

It it is dogwood, the logs will be fairly small. The wood is pinkish,
hard and great to turn. It has a very fine grain and just peels off
with a sharp tool. It sands well, to a glass-like finish.

I've done a few things with dogwood. It is going to be small logs. Go to
ABPW for a post under Dogwood Turning and I'll post a picture of a couple of
things I did.

I have seen dogwood up to about 18 inches, but that is a monster.
Smooth even grain, pinkish tone to the wood, very hard when dry. Makes
excellent boxes, and will take threads well.

Not all dogwood is pinkish and size, it depends on where you live. I am
about 30 miles south of Montgomery, Al and our dogwood is white with a very
dark heart and about 9 to 12" in diameter.

As for how it turns, as others have said, good and finishes well.

As I was growing up, I was told that there were no large dogwood trees
in East Tennessee, as they had been harvested to make spindles, etc.
for commercial looms. The resultant product was said to be very
durable due to the dense and interlocking grain pattern.
