Can anyone please help?
I have White (aluminium) double glazing. It was installed by the previous owner about 15 years ago. It's in basically good condition apart from the hinges which have been progressively failing over the years. These are the hinges for the top 'lights'. I have replaced many myself by drilling out and re-riveting in place. The company I bought the hinges from have now closed and I've run out of my supply stock. I saw some on screwfix but it's almost impossible to tell which are my type from the description given. Refer to http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/...03922&id=15620 for a good example of what I'm after. The dimension given doesn't seem to match any I can find on the existing hinges. i.e. pitch between fixings for example. So is there anywhere I can buy some over the counter? I don't want to order 10 pairs (say) and then find they are wrong. I live in Essex if you know of a local source or maybe a good company I can order from will do. Many thanks in advance..... Regards Paul Hodges |

[ ... ] Sorry for jumping off topic but I read your post with some interest and had a look at the Screwfix URL. We have very badly rusted metal gearing in several of our windows. These were installed in 1996 by a previous owner and I've found out they are called 'VEKA' MATRIX system windows. I've had a few people look at them and promise quotes but they've never materialised. I even looked up VEKA on the web and got a registered member of their network to come out. Presumably there's no money in it for them for repairs. It's never really occurred to me that it could be a DIY job. I thought the regulations for windows were pretty stringent on that sort of thing. But if it is do-able as a DIY job then I'd be very interested. If you come across any interesting sites or contacts in your investigation please post them here. Thanks, Dougie |

As far as I understand, the only regulations regarding windows are for their complete replacement (as opposed to repairs of existing ones). I think there are also regulations about the type of glass used in certain places (immediately next to doors and below a certain height off the ground - both require toughened glass). As for replacing/fixing the hinges etc - I don't know of there being any restriction. D |
