![]() Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004 12:35 p.m. EDT CNN/USA/Gallup: Bush Got Bounce From Dem Convention The first poll taken after the Democratic convention shows a significant bounce - for the Bush-Cheney ticket. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Sunday shows that among likely voters, President Bush reaped a 5-point bounce from the Democratic confab, and he now leads Sen. Kerry, 50 percent to 47 percent. The new numbers represent a sharp reversal from a July 19-21 CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey, which had Kerry leading Bush by two points, 49 percent to 47 percent. Even among registered voters - a group that typically trends more Democratic than likely voters - Bush picked up a 1-point bounce. The CNN/USA/Today poll of registered voters has Kerry now leading Bush by 3 points, 50 percent to 47 percent. In the earlier survey, Kerry led Bush by 4 points, 49 percent to 45 percent. Commenting on the negative bounce for the Kerry-Edwards ticket, dejected CNN political analyst Bill Schneider said Sunday, "The convention rallied voters, but it rallied Republicans more than Democrats." "All those questioned were questioned after John Kerry's acceptance speech," lamented CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child - miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosphy of sniveling brats." -- P.J. O'Rourke |

"All those questioned were questioned after John Kerry's acceptance speech," lamented CNN's Wolf Blitzer. As a guy living in the Boston area, I took the Democratic convention to be a dismal failure -- I kept asking myself where is the beef? Kerry's failure to lay down any plan to correct and recover from the errrors he claimed went unanswered. No big surprise, since as a Massachusetts resident we all here know John Kerry. He is all bluster and totally without substance. This guy cuts his attendance in the Senate more than any other senator, never responds to his constituents mail and issues (unlike Kennedy), and appears to spend most of his time focusing on his own self-interests (such as moving a fire hydrant in front of his home to a neighbors property so that he could have a parking place). This is John Kerry's focus, and evidently reflects his rather strange sense of priorities. 'Nuff said. I am no great fan of Bush, but I pity our country if Kerry is elected president, because I have no reason to believe that he would rise to the position, since he has already demonstrated that he hasn't risen to the positin of senator. Is John Kerry the best that the Democrats could come up with? If so, it's pretty pathetic in my humble opinion! Harry C. |

There are two realities, Virginia, and one of them ain't really real. Ed Huntress While I consider CNN to be largely a leftwing blog, I actually went and read it. Interesting how Kerry is still neck and neck with Bush on some issues, and behind on others, particularly After a convention where typically the challengers convention nets him a 10-15 point bounce. If the original cite was from a rightwing website, its interesting to see them using Leftwing tactics in news presentation. Must really **** off the Left when their own playbook gets used against them. Im reminded of the newspaper article in a Lefty paper with the blazing headlines " Cop Kills Kid". Third paragraph finally gets around to mentioning that the kid was holding up a liquor store with a sawed off shotgun and an off duty police officer shoots the little ******* (long rap sheet), while the first two paras mention the age, race, school, and describes the crying family members. Your usual spin from the Left. Shrug. Gunner "At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child - miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Either Bush or Kerry, if elected is going to have a hard time. In the past 3
years we have added a lot more government and made large tax cuts, we all know what that does. If we don't cut spending and balance the budget (increasing taxes to someone) we will never have a strong economy. The mess we are in now will have to be fixed and whoever does it is not going to be very popular with the tax payers (ME). But we all are part of this mess. |

The important thing about debt is not its absolute amount, but the ratio of debt to assets. The feral government is overwhelmingly the largest landowner in the US. The entire US federal debt could be repaid if the government would sell some of its vast real estate holdings. That would benefit local governments too, since they could then collect property taxes on all that land. Turning that land to productive use would also grow the economy, and hence increase the amount of taxes collected by the government. Gary |

Ok so selling off assets that we as Americans can use to pay the dept to

When can we expect your check? Meanwhile, the federal government holds 627,000,000 acres of land off the commercial market. Much of it is raw land in the West, but a significant amount of it is in urban areas where commercial land is valued *much* higher. There isn't nearly enough gold in Fort Knox to cover the debt. Right, but it's easy and it's a start. The trouble is, when you flood the market with that gold, doesn't the price go down? Likewise, if you start dumping federal lands onto the market, isn't *that* going to depress the market? It will take some time for the new Chinese government owners to strip the last stick of timber off of it, and then they have a lot of digging to do, to get all of the minerals. Ed Huntress |

The supply and demand thing, I believe, is supported only on the notion that prices will perpetually increase and people can profit. Pay waaay too much now because people think they can't go down. People have a short memory and forget declining housing prices in select areas in the past. Something has to burst one of these days as there will come a time when people just can't get loans for a $ 300,000+ crappy house in a bad neighborhood. I suspect that the huge debt of the Govt will eventually blow interest up to the high teens again. And as to property taxes....that is one of my favorite rants and where I am about as conservative wakko nutjob as one gets for a pinko liberal commie ![]() be done. If you have 50 acres and can self support, you should be able to lock yourself up and never be bugged by the outside world. I understand that there are "services" that are intrinisically needed (like roads etc) but that shouldn't be related to property you have already paid for and own. Once it's yours, it should be YOURS. End of off topic rant Koz |

I say again: let's privatize the national debt. We the people are the ones who owe it, anyway. Let's assign each of us his individual share to service or pay down as he sees fit. Converting "the national debt" into 300 million "private" debts would not change how much "we" owe. But it _would_ change how we, as voters, look at government finances. Why, even Gunner might think twice about the wisdom of cutting Warren Buffet's taxes if that translates directly into a bigger balance due on _Gunner's_ debt account :-) -- Tony P. |

I say again: let's privatize the national debt. Sorry but I gotta say it. This is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Not because it's not a good idea in principle, but I am horrified to think what would happen after this was done. Basically the last thing a bankrupt person needs is somebody giving them another credit card. Once the debt was paid down, the politicians would go on a spending spree.
