Actually, Walter - it's just 1 guy; who for whatever reason people
follow. I was one once, so I know. It could be a valuable forum for HVAC related matters, ranging from -" hook the red wire to terminal Y - to DONT TOUCH ANYTHING CALL A PRO". Instead its a place where one man places his entire lifes value on who he can get to side with him and insult others. But to answer your question - yes, my ISP called and said they thanked me for spreading the info needed to clean up internet trash. Wait..its Friday..they wont get the mails till Monday... Yeah, I forgot the internet shuts down on Sat/Sun. Lots of time to get you to continue going postal, and then, it will be silent...no more you. Yes, as you will be banned, just like PJM is. I'll attempt to help - especially if you promise to keep your posts a bit smaller here and if you'll admit that some of us homeowners know the difference between our butts and a hole in the ground. Not all "amateurs" are hacks. It is very sad that alt.hvac has become such a cesspool. I hope you can be instrumental in cleaning it up. I have lurked there for ages and I have posted a few comments there, but I avoid it a lot lately because it has become one of the most immature newsgroup on the net recently. It is the absolute worst possible advertisement for the HVAC industry. Is it possible for you to post a brief summary of what is going on with that newsgroup? I am very computer literate, but I don't understand how anybody except a newsgroup moderate can cancel messages. I also don't know if there are 100 buttheads out there or just a few posting under various usernames. A brief history of that newsgroup and how it has degraded would be extremely helpful. I feel that this is a legitimate discussion on alt.home.repair because many of us get AC/heating advice on both newsgroups - posting and lurking here plus cautiously lurking over on alt.hvac. First, re your first para: so admtted, and a sincere fapology or my past behavior/comments. For a while I wanted to be in the PJM club, and I have no idea why. As far as the cancelling: Like anything else on the net, everything is run under a protocol. Usenet is very siimilar to email, and thus can be hacked. Usenet was also built with the ability to cancl posts; so that you could "take something back". What hte person was doing was forging the header to make it look like he posted it, and then sent the cancel sequence. Fortunately, htere is a way to stop this, simply by posting in: news.admin.net-abuse.usenet Literally, I posted there and within minutes, a gentleman named Howard Knight was on the case and solved the problem quickly. The abuser (Paul Milligan) was quickly dressed down, as well. See, the thread titled " Cancel " REPOST: PJM", for details, pay partuiculr attention to the posts from Howard. Also, if you get some time, read : http://www.killfile.org/faqs/c=ADancel.html, or google "cancelbot". Thank you for your thank you. I think I've done a pretty good job of breaking up the hate group, and others who really want to contribute are beginning to step forward. Finally, cancelbot users (other than using them for spam, and few other valid reasons) are looked upon in asimilar fashion as child molesters are in prison, by the usenet admins. If someone cancels your posts - there are people who will help. |

Yep.
I strongly feel we can clean it up though. One idea I had was that when a user posts a question there and gets abused, then a few thousand posters from here jump in over there to help out. Could turn out to be a useless flamewar, or could teach the scummy ones over there that their behavior is no longer tolerated. In essence, alt.hvac could be made an extension of this group. Probably not likely, but hey, I can dream, can't I? |

Matt you can`t change that group, others have tried and failed. You
can`t change pjm. There are other trolls you don`t even know about there making the mess. But out of 1000 posts you have maybe 20% of them and most all in content. Its good there is www.HeatingHelp.com alt hvac always has been a bar scene |

I have a suggestion. I too tried to get a question answered at alt.hvac and was dressed down for not being a "pro". OK fine. If the "pros" want a place to hang out, fine....why not get another groupd started called alt.hvac.pros.only.no.homeowners.allowed or something like that and the "pros" can sit there and do whatever they want to do. While the rest of the world can use alt.hvac as it should be used to help each other. Mark |

He can spread his hate and insults if he feels like it, but he can no longer delete the thoughts of others. Major loss in power for him, IMO. Truth is he is so full of hatehe LOVES a place where he can hurl his supposed insults, rather than help anyone in need. He wont leave, neither will his minions. Also, there are people there who want to help - but whenever they try, one of PJ's rat pack slams em..... however... as I said... I think the bozo (pjm) behind the curtain has been exposed now, and the good people are standing up. I suggest if we work together..... we can change that group to something valuable. But only if we do it together will it work. |

A record is kept of every cancel request; which is what was in that 20MB post I made. The info in those heaedrs shows who cancelled the post. Using the info, the cancelled posts can be restored. This is what Howard did. You see, Howard doesn't care about the vitriol and fighting. WHat ****ed him off is people who abuse usenet. Cussing, flamewars, all of it - is not an abuse of usenet. Silencing the thoughts of others is most definitely an abuse. ANd, thank god - there are still people in the world who stand up for the original concept of UNIX and Usenet - the free, uninterrupted flow of information... educational, abusive, distastefull.... or otherwise. |
