Default A bed promise fullfilled

I had promised the wife to make a bed for us. I finally completed it.
After years of following this newsgroup, thought I'd post the results of the
work. It's made from knotty rough sawn alder that I had on hand for many
years. It was my first large scale attempt at mortise and tenon. The
finish is done with 3 coats of blond shellac.

Great work .... lots of mortise and tenons, and an excellent job doing them!

Something to be very proud of.

Very nice. Should last a couple hundred years in the family.

How many board feet in there?

Even have hydronic heating to go with that great wood working.

Congratulations.

Lots of mortices there.

Did you rout them out and square them up with a chisel?

I see a router and I see chisels, but I don't see a mortise machine. That's a
lot of mortises to square up by hand!

Very nice work Mike!

To be honest I'm not really sure...I had a bunch of the alder and just
started putting it together.

I deviated from the plans I had which called for using a jig and router
and creating dados in each inner face. I used the radial arm saw to cut the
dados. I then cut each of the railings slightly oversized and used the
jointer to creep up on each of the mortises. Some (most) of the mortises
required a little bit of paring with chisel to make it a tight fit. Time
consuming to say the least, but it seemed to work out quite well. Thanks
for the feedback!

Did you *glue* all those verticals into the mortises? If so, it looks like a
potential glue-up nightmare to me! You'd definitely want to use a glue with a
long open time...

The top and bottom rails for the head and footboard are mortise & tenon
and they were glued. The slats were press fit into each mortise. I used an
18 ga. brad on the inner bottom of both the headboard and footboard and
left the upper portion of the slats free-floating to allow for expansion. I
wouldn't even want to try to glue all 32 slats that were in each
head/footboard. Besides, I thought it would rack it's self apart with
seasonal movement.

Were those the plans from Woodsmith? I made a bed that looks almost
exactly the same using Woodsmith plans a few years ago...
