Default DVD tray

A neighbour's son has pulled out the tray for the integral dvd player
on their Daewoo television. There doesn't seem to be any damage apart
from a split in the back of the tray.

Is there a method for re engaging the tray with the gears whilst re
inserting it?

It depends on the mechanism design. Some can simply be re-inserted as
described by Andrew and they'll sort themselves out.
Others have to be in perfect sync for the mechanism to lift the laser /
motor assembly to engage with the disc hub as it closes, and if out by one
cog tooth then it won't work.
Potentially just forcing the drawer back in will cause more problems. I
would remove the mech from the unit, and have a look at how it works - there
are usually sprung catches you need to be in the right place as you insert
the drawer. Operate the drawer motor pulley by hand and confirm it fully
opens and closes, and that the laser assembly lifts up once "home" - this is
usually all done by the one open/close motor. There will be at least one
"limit" switch to sense when the drawer is fully open and closed to turn off
the motor. Check that this is moving at each end of the travel. (sometimes
it's one n.o. centre-off switch which sits under the drawer and is pushed
forward and back by lugs on the drawer itself, other times seperate switches
for each).
Don't touch the laser lens - greasy fingerprints can cause it to mis-focus.

I repaired professional audio CD players for years and got familier with
these type of mechs!

I 'won' a Sony surround DVD receiver for that very reason.

wannit?"

A quick explore to see how it was supposed to work and my daughter has
a nice SS system in her room ;-)

All the best ..
