Advice On Plastering Artix Ceilings

Can Someone Please Advise Me On Plastering Artix Ceilings,i Have Done A Bedroom Ceiling And Didnt Come Out To Well,parts Of It Was Smooth But Parts Look Rough,you Are Only Allowed 3 Mm Thickness So Is It Wise To Go Thicker To Achieve A Better Finish?
