Did you rout them out and square them up with a chisel?
I deviated from the plans I had which called for using a jig and router
and creating dados in each inner face. I used the radial arm saw to cut the
dados. I then cut each of the railings slightly oversized and used the
jointer to creep up on each of the mortises. Some (most) of the mortises
required a little bit of paring with chisel to make it a tight fit. Time
consuming to say the least, but it seemed to work out quite well. Thanks

Were those the plans from Woodsmith? I made a bed that looks almost
exactly the same using Woodsmith plans a few years ago...
