I did this. I was interested in using a 1/4 inch chuck for other
reasons so made mine this way. It seemed too limber to move the base
to center while under tension, so I had a friend turn me one out of
steel. If you made it to fit a 1/2 inch chuck hardwood would probably
work.



I've always used a dovetailing bit for the smaller guide bushings.
