Really not that hard, Brian.. except in this case for the size...
They were made out of 12" pieces of 4x4" cocobolo each, so you can figure how
big and HEAVY they were on the lathe..

I learned in a few weeks, on scrap pine 3x3" stock...
Just a bowl and a disk with a long pen body between them..
