There are a couple of other possibilities: The lumber customer may
have been a local dealer (or one of his employees), or he may have
been a good friend or favored customer of the dealer.

I'm aware of one instance of a dealer loaning a new van to a guy
moving his daughter halfway across the country to her new job...

"I have it out on a test drive" doesn't necessarily tell the whole
story.
