I think you probably are thinking of linseed oil. It has a unique
smell. It's the basis of Watco Danish Oil, so if you've ever smelled
that you'll recognize it.

Most tung oil finishes I've used pretty much smell like any other wiping
varnish - ie, mostly a paint thinner/solvent sort of smell...
